About Yaseen
I graduated with a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2016, where I earned a Dean's Scholar Prize for academic excellence, the David Westfall Community Leadership Award, and was selected as a Class Marshal by my peers. For the past ten years, I have advised high school, college, graduate, and law students at institutions such as Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Cornell, Duke, and many others. I have successfully guided students in navigating their career paths, assisting them as they work with specialized college and law school admissions advisers, and providing support in developing compelling personal statements, refining resumes, and identifying suitable programs. I help them examine their own trajectories and identify narratives that align with their experiences and future interests. I graduated summa cum laude from Stony Brook University, receiving the Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence and being elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Additionally, I was the first (and only) Truman Scholar awarded by the Harry S. Truman Foundation at my alma mater. My professional experience includes working with the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, co-chairing the Gucci Changemakers Council—where I supported high-achieving students nationwide—co-teaching at Harvard Law School, and advising brand presidents, co-founders, and CEOs on brand storytelling, employee engagement, and corporate culture. I also served as a board member for the Friends of Thirteen and contributed video op-eds to the New York Times Opinion section. After two years as a corporate attorney at Skadden, I joined Yale Law School in 2019, where I focused on enhancing the professional development and academic experience of our J.D. students. Throughout my career, I have advised high school, undergraduate, and graduate students and currently direct an academic pipeline initiative at Yale Law School. Importantly, I am not involved in admissions, so there are no ethical concerns regarding my advising work. Additionally, my writings have been published in The New York Times, the Stanford Journal of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, the Harvard Negotiation Law Review Online, and the White House blog.
Why do I coach?
Coaching matters deeply to me because I know firsthand how transformative mentorship can be. As someone who grew up in a first-generation family with limited access to academic and professional guidance, I had to navigate these spaces largely on my own. I worked hard to uncover the academic resources available to me as a college student, build meaningful faculty mentorship networks, and seek out opportunities that would shape my future. Beyond that, my identity as a queer person of color has always been central to my story and the community-building work I do. At every stage of my career—whether excelling in college, winning paper prizes, receiving a competitive national scholarship, gaining admission to Harvard Law School, publishing in The New York Times, or working at Skadden and Yale—I have relied on mentors who saw my potential and helped me grow. Their support was instrumental, and I now strive to offer the same kind of guidance to students navigating their own paths. I have worked with students from across the country and even taught students abroad, helping them refine their academic skills, develop strong applications, and position themselves for long-term success. In particular, I have guided students through the law school application process and helped them think strategically about other graduate programs, ensuring they understand how to craft compelling applications that align with their goals. My advising services are structured to meet students where they are, whether they are in high school, college, or post-college. I work with students who are committed to academic growth, goal-setting, and professional development. My approach is tailored to individual needs, helping students strengthen their writing, analytical thinking, time management, and interdisciplinary reasoning. Through structured mentorship, I help students unlock their potential early on, preparing them for higher-level academic and professional success. My goal is not just to help students succeed in the present, but to equip them with the skills, confidence, and mindset to thrive in any academic or professional environment they choose to pursue.
