About Ryan
Hi Everyone, It's great to meet you and welcome to my Leland page! My name is Ryan, and I am originally from San Francisco. I did my undergraduate at the University of California, Berkeley, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude in Economics and Statistics. I hold an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley - Haas School of Business, where I specialized in Finance. Professionally, I am an investment banker, investor, and finance instructor. I was a Healthcare Investment Banker at Wells Fargo Securities for ~5 Years, where I served as Staffer, Recruiting Team Captain, and Manager. I have trained 3 classes of summer and full-time investment banking analysts and executed over $10.0Bn in deals across 90+ transactions. I later transitioned to the buy side, where I worked as a Credit Research Analyst at Franklin Templeton and taught undergraduate finance at UC Berkeley. Currently, I work at Training the Street, where I train investment banking new hires in Excel, accounting, financial statement modeling, valuation, capital markets, DCF, M&A, LBO, public comparables, precedents transactions, accretion/dilution, and more. I have helped countless students and mentees, both undergraduate and MBA, break into investment banking and place into Bulge Bracket and Elite Boutique investment banks, including Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan, Centerview, Evercore, and Lazard. My secret sauce lies in being able to easily break down complex finance concepts as well as provide students access to direct interview case studies, market research reports, and a vast investment banking network of former students, mentees, classmates, friends, and colleagues. Having also recruited and interviewed numerous investment banking summer and full-time analysts, I know exactly what students need to break into the industry. I look forward to working with you and helping you achieve your dreams and goals. Feel free to send me an email at ryan.q.tan@berkeley.edu. Cheers, Ryan
Why do I coach?
If I could restart my investment banking career, I wish I had a personal coach/mentor to help me break in. I would have saved so much time and heartache in learning finance, technicals, networking, and interviewing and would have been able to break in much faster with greater initial success route. Instead, I had to learn how to break into investment banking the hard way. My family is not from finance and are first generation immigrants. I had no network and did not grow up in a wealthy environment. I was never the "popular kid" and did not drink or party or was one of the "Frat Bros". Needless to say, getting into a finance club or business fraternity where the connections were was a struggle for me. I had to start from complete scratch in learning how to dress and speak, find and access education materials, build my brand, and cold network to investment bankers. I got yelled at a lot along the way because I was not part of "the club", but I eventually succeeded and did quite well. Being a coach allows me to help students directly and have them avoid the struggles that I did. It also helps level the playing field. You don't have to drink or party or come from a wealthy family to break into investment banking. I have the network, the interview case study materials, and the market knowledge you need to succeed, and I have trained countless students to great success. All I ask is that you try your very best, have a strong work ethic, be open to coaching, and I guarantee that you will make it. You'll also learn a lot and have fun along the way.
