About Joshua
Hi I’m Joshua! I’m a fourth-year medical student at the University of Pikeville in Kentucky and will be applying to psychiatry residency this fall. My journey to medical school was difficult. I applied three times and almost ended up in a different career. The difference-maker for me was the support and guidance I received from mentors and coaches who helped me convey how my experiences will allow me to develop into a great physician. With their guidance, I gained admission into medical school and learned what to focus on in medical school applications. During medical school, I have been deeply involved in the admissions process, including: • Coaching three students on gaining admission into medical school • Serving as a speaker for applicant interview days • Meeting with the admissions committee to discuss the profile of a strong applicant • Organizing scholarships for incoming students These experiences along with the challenges I faced while applying to medical school have prepared me to effectively advise medical school applicants and help them acheive their goal of matriculation into medical school.
Why do I coach?
Medical school is an incredibly challenging experience, and at some point, during the four years, each student will face obstacles. These challenges can be in the form of schoolwork, patient interactions, keeping a balanced schedule, or personal situations, and they make it easy to "burn out" and forget why medicine was your chosen path. Identifying why you chose medicine is essential when applying to medical school. We all have a unique and personal story of how our passion for medicine developed, and efficiently conveying that story to the admissions committee in the personal statement and during the interview will make you stand out from the thousands of applicants that each school encounters and movtivate you during the tough times during medical school. I would not be in medical school if not for the many mentors and teachers who provided me with guidance. I had to apply three times and complete a Masters program before gaining acceptance. I made several mistakes during my first two attempts including not applying to enough schools, applying to schools where I would not be a good fit, and not effectively highlighting my strengths in my personal statement. My goal is to help you avoid mistakes that I and my peers have made and acheive your goal of becoming a physican. The application cycle is challenging and applicants need the right players in their support team to maximize their chances of gaining acceptance. I desire to become a member of your team and do everything I can to see you succeed.
