About Derek

I am currently on my last quarter at Chicago Booth, and will be starting at Barclays in February as an Associate in their Technology practice. Prior to my MBA at Booth, I have been working in tech as a software engineer, and had a stint at BCG on the solutions team for one of their software tools. I grew up in Malaysia and came to the US when I was 19. No matter where you're from, your unique background can be an advantage, so let's work together to figure out how to tell your story.

Why do I coach?

I wasn't always well spoken and polished. When I came to America, I was quiet and bookish. I believed that education was everything, and that good grades were the only requirements for a good future. When I did not manage to land my dream job after college, I had to seriously reconsider my view of the world. Over the years, as I worked with my mentors and my coaches to readjust my outlook, I have slowly built up my social skills to now be able to handle any interpersonal challenge that comes my way. Today, I hope to pass on my knowledge to you. I chose to emphasize my ability to craft stories because I believe stories are the best way to build connection. As the adage goes: "people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you make them feel". Today, being unforgettable is more important than it has ever been. Recruiters are facing tremendous challenge having to sift through thousands of applications to find the handful that they want to bring in for an interview. At a recruiting event, a company representative will be talking to 10 candidates at the same time. How can you stand out from the crowd? Stories are real. They are authentic, they are hard to fake, and when done right, they are memorable.
